Leaf mine ID => Agromyzidae: Chromatomyia horticola/syngenesiae
ESant
Hello,

I photographed this leaf mine on a Sonchus sp. in Bazzano (AQ), Italy on October 5th 2020. Is it an Agromyzidae mine? And is it possible to identify the species?

Thank you in advance,
Emanuele

It looks very like a fly mine. Ideally you should hold the leaf up to the light so it is backlit and you can see what kind of frass there is. I have no information about Italian species but the website Bladmineerders.nl should help you get started. It is Dutch but you can change the language to English.

Again, maybe not what you need in Italy, but the website Ukflymines.co.uk may help you a bit.

This is probably either Chromatomyia horticola or syngenesiae but the larva has perished. You would need to rear and most likely dissect an adult male to confirm the causer.

My website lists all known Agromyzidae miners on Sonchus;

This website is dedicated to Agromyzidae and is by far the most reliable and up to date resource there is.

Thank you both very much! I often used Bladmineerders.nl for the plant parasite identification but I didn't know agromyzidae.myspecies.info, so thank you again so much for the suggestion!
