This 6-8mm, very black fly was extremely active, feeding on solidago blossoms. A noticeable characteristic was that, when settled, its wings were always held horizontally open at about 80 degrees to the body. There are several clusters of solidago on the side of a path between fields left to fallow, about 20m from a mixed mature tree species, wooded area.
