Black fly, approx 7mm in body length. Picture taken in December, east China(Zhejiang province). I think it is somewhat similar to a Tachinidae but I have doubts. Perhaps something in another family? Thanks in advance.

Difficult to say. Most probably a Tachinidae: Blondeliini, but could be something else. Theo |

Really appreciate you sharing your expertise with me, Theo! I occasionally collect insects that are easy to collect (slow-moving ones) during my photography trips but yes mostly I've been simply photographing them. I'll see if I can collect more so that I can obtain better identification help. But at least I'll try to take more photos of the same species from more angles so that crucial features can be visible. |

I’ll try my best to help, but the fauna of Zhejiang prov. is little known, so at some point we do need specimen. For instance, another Tachinid posted here from South Korea proved to be new for science. There is no way such a result is possible from pictures inly, alas. Theo |
