Hi James, could be we are lucky: I've found a similar female some days ago and I've keyed (Gregor et al) it as Helina deleta: Legs mainly black Wing base distincly yellow 2-4 dc 3-5 ac on t3 May to July... Edited by eklans on 16-05-2022 17:38 Greetings, Eric Kloeckner |

Thank you both. Helina deleta would be an exceptional find, Erik, as it has not yet been recorded in the Netherlands. I am attaching a photo of the wingbase but I doubt it's good enough. Look forward to your reactions. James |

Hi James, I've checked all possible Helinas following Gregor et al's key 8 Radial node setulose and this is the result (with one excluding criterion for our flies): cilipes => frons male broad trivittata => frons male broad decipiens => 3dc post, legs ±yellow moedlingensis => frons male broad fratercula => 3dc post vicina => legs ±yellow pollinosa => South Europe consimils => 3dc post, legs ±yellow crinita => legs ±yellow ciliatocosta => legs ±yellow confinis => legs ±yellow Compared to the description of delete we can see: ? longest aristal hairs about 2x postpedicel y pra > p npl y wings intensively yellow basally y calypters conspicuously yellow y legs black y? tibia II 3 p y tibia III 3-5 av, 2 ad your male y? eyes densely pale haired y very narrow fronto-orbital plates separated by linear frontal vitta y? tibia I 0 p ? tibia III few elongated p setae ? abdomen densely grey dusted, 2 pairs of spots my female y eyes only sparesly haired ? tibia I 1 p y tibia III no elongated p setae ? abdomen grey dusted, shifting black spots You'll find the thread here: https://diptera.i..._id=105979 Résumé: I think, both flies are Helina deleta but I'm not an expert! Eric, thank you so much for your detailed study of this male. I will see what they say on the Dutch forum (Waarneming.nl) and I will report back if I get an answer. I doubt they will accept a new species without a specimen. James |
