Lauxaniidae? -> likely
CedricMondy
Hi everyone,

This one found in town seems a bit odd to me. I first though it could be a Sapromyzosoma but...

It might be possible that the thorax was damaged during the capture (although I did not notice) but even so, the chaetotaxy seems weird to me.

Any idea?

Do you think the family at least is correct?

Anyone inspired by this one?

The costal vein does not seem to be broken... Still, I would compare Chamaemyiidae.

I'm sure Jan meant Chyromyidae...A bit early in the morning for this ... Smile

Thank you both! I will have a look at these families, and more specifically the second one.

I checked for Chyromyidae, but it seems this does not match. Indeed, in 'The European Families of the Diptera', Pjotr Oosterbroek says that this family is characterized by yellow (here black) bristles and hairs and by the lack of dorsal preapical bristle on the tibiae (here they are present). These specifics are also mentionned by John Carr in this forum.
Species from Chamaemyiidae are usually silvery grey flies (not exactly the case here) and they also lack preapical bristles on the tibiae.

I will keep searching, thanks in advance for any hint!

Thank you for your note, Roger - it was exactly so. Unfortunately, Chyromyidae do not seem to match, then what? Still a lauxaniid?

John Carr
I see no intra-alar bristle so it is not in the Minettia group. Some Sapromyza and Sapromyzosoma have two strong katepisternals and spots on the distal tergites.

It might be bits and pieces of several different flies cobbled together by Frank Enstein after he's had a few drinks. Or it might be a good idea to run a Geiger Counter across it [just in case] Grin

Thank you all!
