Chloropidae, Oscinellinae: Gaurax spec., a typical Palaearctic species. Gaurax spp. prefer forests, including monocultures of conifers. They can easily be reared by enclosing large numbers of fallen cones in boxes made of carton [they prevent condense water], inside painted black and equipped with a fastened light funnel and on its top a hyaline collecting container, called "photoeclector". Females outnumber males, also in the field. Parthengenesis is not yet known but it should be tested. Identification nearly always possible only by dissecting the male genitalia, the shape of surstyli being very peculiar in the different species. Larval stages behind loose bark and in rotting wood being attacked by other insects. Aggregations of Gaurax spp. on bird droppings, where the flies ingest electrolytes. |
