 New Eresus sp. 1 - velvet spider

Hi I found in Summer 2007 one Eresidae spider in South of Portugal. This is an undescribed species new for the Science. (I know that someone is describing this new species. I think the article will be release very soon. Then I will let know which and when. I only found this spider a little after the first discoverer.) For now this beauty calls Eresus sp. 1 - maybe it will be named Eresus dunensis or similar (or not)... It is a female. The male is fabulous but I never saw it so far. I took this photo today. The spider built a rose eggcase that looks like bubblegum. It will die very soon so her spiderling can feed... The female velvet spider rarely leaves her retreat and feeds on prey when they pass very near to her hide. I saw many sucked tenebrionids near around the web. They keep the exoskeletons in the beginning of the retreat like a trophy! Any news about the new name for this spider, I will let know you.

I think the male is white and not red as other Eresus species. Two years ago, a friend sent a photo with this wonderfull white-black spider. She took it also in Portugal, in western Algarve. Whith the help of the 'German spider network', we found the person who describes this species, and he confirmed the photo belonging to the new species. Therefore, it must be common in southern Portugal? Perhaps, I may organize the photo of the male to show it here. Regards, Christian |

the size about 9 mm. Christian, you are right. The male spider is very beautiful, even more than the female ones. But much harder to find out! I never saw the male so far... yet!  Well, I don't know if they are rather common in South. At least I can tell that so far they ONLY were found in South, never outsides Algarve. I'm eager to see that photo. There is another species unknown. Eresus sp3. ! So far we have Eresus cinnaberinus Eresus cinnaberinus frontalis Eresus sedilloti Eresus solitarius Eresus sp.1 Eresus sp.3 Stegodyphus lineatus http://www.aranha...&Itemid=43 -- ERESIDAE. you can see some very nice photos there. And very unusual appearance of some velvet spiders. |

Actually not The males of Eresus are easier to find as they spend their life running around to find some female; as you said yourself, the females never leave their retreat and thus are very hard to find. I was very happy this summer to find a female of Eresus cinnaberinus tricolor in Corse, a very beautiful spider that was only found 3 times before I did.
