I had 2 of these Tachinidae in a yellow pan trap on the bank of a small brook in France, Tarn. Which genus or species could they be? France - Paulinet (FR) yellow pan trap 10-12 juli 2022 Thanks in advance, Paul https://observati...262077268/ Edited by Paul Hoekstra on 12-01-2023 22:25 |

Gut feeling is Phorinia, but specimen is in suboptimal condition, to put it politely. Theo |

I tried to key it with Tschornig (1994) and could more or less reach Phorinia aurifrons, although I always have problems with point 76 in the generic key, if the cheeks have bristles or not. The bristles above the vibrissae should not count as bristles on the cheeks? And I think the pre-alar bristle was somewhat weaker than the notopleural bristles. I have added some additional photos. Note that the additional photos are of a different specimen from the same trap (but I think the same species). |

The strong bristles above the vibrissa are on the facial ridge, not the parafacial. |

So they don’t count on ‘ parafacial hairy’ and the prealar is, indeed , shorter so I still think this is Phorinia. Theo |
