Hello everyone, I photographed this horsefly today on a rock next to a creek in the Black Forest, southwest Germany. The size was 18 to 20 mm. I think the animal belongs to the genus Hybomitra. Is that correct and is there perhaps more to say? Greetings Siggi Edited by Siegfried Rudolf on 16-06-2023 07:01 |

Hello Siggi, according to Theo's book "Families of Flies with Three Pulvilli (Zeegers, Schulten)" it could be the male H. auripila.

Hello Eric, That's an interesting tip, thank you. I am attaching a picture and a section of the picture where you can see the three pulvilli better. Maybe Theo will comment on that too. Greetings, Siggi |

I tend to agree. Aterrima is not in the book and should be considered. But males auripila can be very dark (my hypothesis that that is the reason Mally considered them synonym), this seems to be such a one. DNA is different. Theo |

Hi Theo, thank you for this information. Then I name the animal Hybomitra cf. auripila. Thanks again to Eric. Greetings Siggi |
