hi flyforum, This afternoon, I found this fly on bark of Ash. It looks like Fannia to me but I am not sure. Size ~8mm place: Amsterdam forest temperature: 5 degrees |

Fannia don't have 4 dc beyond suture. It's a Muscidae, I think Hebecnema. In this case, it should be Hebecnema nigra with white parafacialia, entirely black legs and virtually bare eyes.

Thank you Stephane, for your explanation. I have watched several Fannia's and they have less dc beyond suture (mostly 3?). The suture isn't always good visible on these Fannia sp.? (just a bit) Is Hebecnema nigra a winter species? or a early spring species? My second Muscidae sp. in winter, so far. |

Fannia have not a well marked suture indeed, and 2+3 dc. Other differences are : arista never plumose (only Piezura have into Faniidae), wing venation particular (especially Sc, A1 and A2). Hebecnema nigra flight period is said IV-IX, so this one is two months earlier than usual. Stephane. |
