Muscid blowing red bubble
jck
Can anyone ID this fly? Limnophora, maybe? Also, does anyone know why this bubble is bright red? Seen today - 10 August, 2023 - in Scotland.

I don't have an answer to either question, but I am reminded of a story about a hive of honey bees in New York City who discovered a factory making maraschino cherries. They drank the red juice and came home to make red honey.

There is also a famous story about bees in France which produced honey of a variety of colours, much to everyone's consternation. It transpired that they were using the waste from the manufacture of M & Ms at a local factory. If you look it up online, there's a good photo of a multicolour honeycomb.
