Male of Bellardia sp.? => Bellardia viarum
Siegfried Rudolf
Hello everyone,
I photographed this approximately 7 mm fly today in southwest Germany in the Black Forest. Is this a male of the genus Bellardia?

Hi Siggi, Calliphoridae is correct and it's probably a male Bellardia vulgaris:
wing veins brownish, not black?
hairs on tergite 4 shorter than marginal bristles?
1+2 intralalar bristles?
Greetings, Eric Kloeckner

Hi Eric,

many thanks for your answer. Bellardia vulgaris is a good option. Unfortunately, it is not easy to see whether the wing veins are brownish or black because the sunlight is so bright. The length of the hairs on tergite 4 is also difficult to see because the enlarged image is blurry. Do you think I can still write Bellardia cf. vulgaris?

Greetings Siggi

Hi Siggi, the last image shows the hairs on tergite 4 being approx. as long as the marginals and the right wing's veins look really black.
I think you may write Bellardia viarum.

Hi Eric,

distinguishing between the often similar looking species is very difficult. It's a good thing that there is a specialist light. Thank you very much.

Greetings Siggi
