Dasineura or Rhabdophaga
Gerrit Oehm
Hello,

I found this gallmidge on März 27, 2020 in Göttingen, Lower Saxony, Germany. From the host (Salix sp.) I "read" that it should be Dasineura or Rhabdophaga, is it possible to say which genus? https://bladmineerders.nl/host-plants/plantae/spermatopsida/angiosperma/eudicots/superrosids/rosids/fabids/malpighiales/salicaceae/salix/genus-salix/

Thank you for your help!

Gerrit

I don't know how to distinguish the genera from this photo. Dasineura is polyphyletic. Both genera key out in multiple places in Gagne's (2018) key to North American Cecidomyiinae. The North American Rabdophaga that breed in buds of Salix key out in only one place, running through these alternatives (starting from supertribe Lasiopteridi, male characters omitted):

C not interrupted immediately posterior to juncture with R5.
Palpus of 4 segments.
Tergites with scales. Pulvilli less than one-third as long as claws.
Protrusible part of ovipositor and cerci cylindrical, flexible.
Claws with single basal tooth on all legs.
Tergites with lateral setae.
Katepisternum with scales. Claws with robust basal tooth. Protrusible part of ovipositor with prominent lateral sclerite along its length.
