pregnant Syrphus
Sundew
Hi,
Ivy (Hedera helix) flowers attract several syrphids, many Syrphus representatives among them. I remember that colouration of the hind femora is important for species discrimination, but I am not sure if these are dark enough for S. vitripennis. So please help me to learn more about the genus.
Thanks, Sundew

I think it's torvus (eyes hairy on pic 3?).

I have lots of Syrphus pics, but only some of them seem to show very short hairs on the eyes. The two upper are magnifications of the pics given above, the two lower are from another individual. This feature makes my camera meet its limits...
Regards, Sundew

I agree with torvus.

Best time to find torvus, to my opinion, is early spring, when this species is quite abundant, but the other two less abundant.

I didn't mean to say that torvus cannot be found by the 1st of october Grin
But early spring is soon! Wink
