Limoniidae?
Josef Buecker
Hello Forum,

flies in copula from the alder marshland in Hagen (D) 175 m above sea level. This photo I took on Oktober 1st 2007. The plant in the background is Salix caprea.

May be it is Limonia spec.? Is a closer determination possible?

Best wishes

Josef

Heeeeeelllllloooo?!?Sad

Is there nobody familiar with sort of midges? Or ist it simply too difficult to make a determination only by picture?

I looked around the internet. Now my opinion is:

Limonia nubeculosa MEIGEN

What do you think?

Josef

What is the size of this crane fly?

I do not think it is Limonia nubeculosa, and it may not even be a Limoniid crane fly. The image for me is too small and not focused enough to recognize the family.

Hello Yespok,

I think, the leaf lamina of the Salix caprea was around 8 cm long. So, the body-lenght of one "crane fly" should be around 2 cm.

This mating pair is in the family Tipulidae. They are in the genus Tipula, either subgenus Savtshenkia , or subgenus Pterelachisus . Difficult to tell based on the image alone.
