I think this is an Anthomyia cf. pluvialis. Taken last weekend in Silgueiros, on stone. |

I would not like to commit myself to a definite det. The black spots are rather more distinct than is usually the case in pluvialis, and the arista rather long. It could be quinquemaculata female.The identification of female Anthomyia species is a matter of comparing under the microscope a number of characters. In my own collection I am sure there are some females of Anthomyia which are incorrectly named. The black patterns on thorax are a useful guide, but over a larger area (i.e.Africa) break down, and one has to recourse to the male genitalia, mainly the shape of pregonites and postgonites. |
