Head of Sepsidae in detail

Hi

I took this photo a few moments ago.
This is a head of sepsid fly. Strong diffration pattern on the eyes. I wonder what is the role of this. Repair that anterior part of the eyes' ommatidia are much longer than the posterior..

Tried to attach an image to a forum post. jpg, 32kB, 72dpi, no blanks, ... File name is correctly displayed, but when I click "Preview Thread" it just vanishes. Help!
