two flys making love (two images)

Member Location: Posts: 3 Joined: 02.03.06	Hello everybody, I took the following two pictures showing the same fly couple at 8th September 2005 in Zwickau, Germany at a glade near a pond. I'd like to upload them to the Wikipedia projects, but I do not know which species it is. All people I already asked told me that it is complicated to find out. All I know is that it could be the family Anthomyiidae or Muscidae. I've been referred to this forum, because here "are the real experts". So, you are my last hope. Anthomyiidae is difficult family, which badly needs full revision. There is some hearsay that this work is in process, but anyway not finished yet. You can use this photo as good image of copulating Anthomyiidae sp. May be in future somebody ID it farther. Nikita Nikita Vikhrev - Zool Museum of Moscow University

Member Location: Posts: 1794 Joined: 14.01.06	Aka Truly - Anthomyiids are very difficult. Many of the females have not been described and many of the males require dissection to ID to species level. Michael Ackland has created a draft key for the British species, which is available from him directly. However, if you are not used to using keys and don't have much experience with diptera in general, this particular key would be extremely daunting. Although I will make great use of it, it is very dense and needs perserverance and motivation to work through, and to do it from a photograph without a specimen would be impossible to species level.
