macro views of very small fly
Dimitri Geystor
At first I thought it was a speck of dust on my table.
Then, through a magnifier, it turned out to be a very small (1.5 mm) dead fly.
Pretty good subject to try my new macro lens on.

Here are two views of of the insect :

And here are the links to two full-size photos, for more detail.

and

Any identification suggestions ?

Thanks,

Dimitri

Hi, Dimitri.
Good lens!
Drosophila is not rare guest in our houses.
May be Paul will give you even species level ID.

From what I can tell from this is it is a female of either Drosophila melanogaster or D. simulans.

By the way, Nikita, these are composite images (some 15 shots for each, with very shallow DOF)

Perseus
What equipment please? This looks like an indoor shot with artificial light or falsh?

Dimitri Geystor
Perseus : Yes, indoor indeed. The fly, already dead, fell out of a flower I was manipulating.
Equipment : Canon EOS 20d, Canon macro lens MP-E 65mm (dedicated to extreme close-ups from 1 x to 5 x), Canon macro flash Twin lite MT-24EX, Novoflex rack and pinion ramp (for focussing).
Regards,
Dimitri
