Chocolate eyes

hello fly-forum,

this fly was sitting on my rucksack
near this fly, there where more flies like this one sitting on trees, but much more smaller.

~7 mm
redbraun eyes
black and heavy/hairy thorax
Biotoop: wet-woodforrest
(I've got some shots of the wings)


any suggestion?

Yes, they look quite similar, also the veins have similarity.

Perhabs Ophyra sp.?

Hi Robert!

If the first fly was found in early spring it is most probably an anthomyiid called Egle ciliata. It is very common everywhere in Finland. All Egle species fly in the spring and feed on Salix flowers. E. ciliata is by far the largest species in the genus and (as the scientific name suggests) it has unusually long & dense hairs on thorax.

Yes, this fly was yesterday and I saw it on Salix.
