 Which kind of insect?

Hello Forum, this larva (?) was in a drop of brownish water (left part), that was fixed on a leaf of Phalaris arundinacea. It became visible, when I removed the water (right part). Does anybody know, what kind of insect it is? A larva of coleoptera? Hagen, NRW, Germany, alder marshland, 175 msm, June 17th 2008 Best regards, Josef |

yes..looks like a coleopterous larva to me.

It looks like either a chrysomelid or a weevil, though I don't know any that feed on Phalaris. |

Oulema melanopa feeds on Phalaris. This larva looks very like it!

Definitely Oulema melanopa, they cover themselves in their own excrement for defence, and there are a lot about this year leaving little splodges on my jeans as I walk through wheat crops!! Sue  |
