Bibio varipes?
Robert Heemskerk
Today I found two flies, which are I think Aslilidae.
I have no experience with this kind of flies.
To be honest, I never saw one before.

So I hope this is Asilidae sp.!
And it would be great to know what specie this is Smile

On the wing there was a little shining green/purple
length: ~10 mm

greetings Robert,

I could have known this..Angry, I spent some time on these flies some days ago..

In early spring this could be B. Johannis.
I see a dark pterostigma, but is it black or brown..?
The light hairs on the thorax makes me think of B. Lanigerus..

On another picture I can see clearly a big spine on the frontal leg, this means that it is a Bibio sp. anyway!

On the frontal leg the metatars 3 = small and long, Bibio varipes could be the specie.
Also the time of flying and the biotope (woodforest) fits..
I believe it is Bibio varipes Smile

But the legs of this male are not black?!, which I have seen on other pictures of B. Varipes..

greets, Robert Smile

Difficult to see the pterostigma clearly but with pale hairs on the thorax and pale tibiae I would guess is is B.lanigerus.

Hello Chris,

Yesterday I found a mistake in my determination of this fly.
For the metatarsers (3!) I looked to the wrong leg(it's the third leg and not the frontleg)
That together with a dark pterostigma, whiite hairs, big red spines makes B. langerus a better candidate!

Thanks again for your reaction Smile
