Anax imperator eating Sarcophagidae
Susan R Walter
I encountered this female Anax imperator at 21.00 hours, 30 May 2008, hunting up and down a track through a wheat crop, Indre et Loire, central France. After some minutes she caught this Sarcophagid and landed in the crop to consume it. I could hear her crunching the body of the fly as she ate.

Cosmin - I have nice photos of a male from an inner city park in east London too Smile Thanks for the compliment.

Rui - that is one mean fly ! I've seen Asilids take damselflies, but not anything as big as in your photo.

Yes, ID is correct: Anax imperator. Also the said sex is correct.

Rui, your dragonfly is Sympetrum fonscolombei.

Is not Sympetrum (more than 8 antenodal transversal vein).
Some Orthetrum (~12 antenodal transversal vein), this in Romania will be Orthetrum coerulescens (i will check if you have other similar species and come back here).

also for me this is the biggest prey i have seen on a robberfly.

Cosmin, thank you very much for the correction. This species is very common here, the blue males are very beautiful.
