Empis sp.

Hello Flyforum,

On some white flowers I saw some Empis sp.

I only know them from books and the internet, so it was nice to see these flies alive! Wink
The backbody of the Empis flies were different, I think it has to do with male and female...(?)
And last but not least.., what kind of Empis sp. are these?
size ~10-12mm

3) and this empis from above, you can see the wing and thorax better.
it is the male from above (see picture 1)

This is Empis trigramma, not uncommon in the Netherlands. The first image is a male (the shape of the male genitalia is characteristic), the second and third are females. Especially in the third image the three dorsal tripes (tri-gramma) are clear. Often found on... umbels.

Tried to attach an image to a forum post. jpg, 32kB, 72dpi, no blanks, ... File name is correctly displayed, but when I click "Preview Thread" it just vanishes. Help!
