(No) Tachinid
Juergen Peters
Hello!

This 10 mm fly looks like a Tachinid, but the wing venation doesn't match. What can it be? Found yesterday afternoon in our garden in Ostwestfalen/Germany on a dogwood bush (Cornus).
Best regards,
Jürgen

Hi Juergen.
My test - it is rather typical Muscidae.

Well, I will burst one dream bubble for you. It is not Tachinidae. The medial vein runs straight to the wing margin and that points towards Muscidae and closely related families. I think this it Muscidae, but perhaps someone else can tell you more precisely which one it is.

Hello, Nikita and Paul!

Thanks! I knew it was no Tachinid, only the stiff hairs and the orange colour, divided by a thick line, reminded me of some Tachinids at first sight.

This species (there does not seem to be many muscids with orange abdomen) seems to be extremely common right now in Hungary in broad leaved forests.

Ph. subventa (=variegata) was very common in end of march in sochi region. If it is realy Ph. subventa.

Aha - I was just going to suggest P subventa as a possibility and ask what the difference from P variegata was. Now, presumably, I know.
