Empis for ID
Nikita Vikhrev
Moscow region, 19 may, around 9mm.
1. I hope this time it is Empis?
2. Who is the victim, is it female of Hilara sp.?

1. I decided that victim isn't Hilara. Some Hybotidae?
2. On the same wall there was a lot another(?) Empidida with same body colour, but with clear wings and white (not yellow-brown halters) and with dark spot near end R2+3.
Rhamphomyia?

Well, the top one is not easy. It certainly is Rhamphomyia. In the second post it is clear that vein R4+5 has no fork and the mouthparts in the first post are clearly too short for Empis. I think it is a species of the R. sulcata group. The prey certainly is Hilara.

The last series of pictures are another Rhamphomyia. This specimen is a female from a subgenus where the females often have a deviating wing venation (look at the size of the discal cell): R. (Megacyttarus) crassirostris.

Thank you Paul. Someday I'll comprehend this Empididae.
Unfortunely Rh. crassirostris (=nigripes) is collected, but Rh. (sulcata?) - notSad
Just in case I add Rh. crassirostris male with good visible genitalia.
