a fly from the Metopia-family?
shar
Dear all,

Is this a fly from the Metopia-family. And do his wings just look as if some other animal has taken a bite. Both wings seem to look the same?

greetings,
Shar

You save me a lot of effort Smile

This not so sizable fly became extremely common in the last two weeks in Hungary and I took many pictures of this creature. I hope someone can identify it at the species level.

For me this fly looks mor like a Calliphorid fly, rather than a Sarcophagidae, but let us wait for the experts.

The wings are just worn I think, it is normal after emerging from the pupa. This kind of raggednes on the trailing edge is quite commonly seen, especially in Calyptrate flies, possibly because there is not such a strong structure preventing the mechanical shear at the trailing edge, like the strong costal vein at the leading edge.

I think it is Pollenia sp., Calliphoridae. Very much same looking fly and also very common was kindly ID for my by Andrey Ozerov as Pollenia rudis, but I don't dare say it myself.
As for wing damage. You can see same damages in case of dragonflies how live and fly ong enought. It is late season for this species odf Pollenia, so wings damage because of high using. By the way, damages often in case of frequent fliing Calyptrata, and more rare in case of small (short living) and less active flies. I think.
