Hey Martin, Nice you recognised it, it din't ring a bell when I saw it. But, we don't have armipes in Europe! I guess you mean setosus, that species is recorded from Spain (and some surrounding countries), whereas the other two species (maquarti and rufus) are known from respectively Sicily and Malta, but these two are also recorded from North Africa. Gerard, you are right, armipes is a bluish grey species, I only found in North Africa, while rufus is often intensely reddish and might be the same species as macquarti. P setosus is the most common of these very rare and fast flying Syrphids, and I am sure the one in the picture is setosus... Cheers Martin Martin Hauser |
