some dipteran nomenclature
romunov
Hello,

I'm trying to identify some flies from around the house (Ljubljana, Slovenia). Most flies that I've managed to ID so far are Tachinidae, but some are different families.

I'm using Oosterbroek's key to families of European flies and on p. 57, question 88/89 asks for "second antennal segment triangular at outer side". I was hoping someone would clarify this, as there are no drawings to illustrate this. I imagine that the second segment, if observed from the lateral outer side, has a triangular shape. Would this assumption be of any value?

Figure 189 shows a typical clusiid head, with the triangular projection on the outer side of the second antennal segment. This is described in the Palaearctic Manual as "usually with a characteristic angular extension on [the] outer distal edge"

Thank you for your answer. Unfortunately, some other priorities are keeping my dipteran work at bay for the moment, but will resume ASAP.

Hopefully, more ponderings about naming anatomical parts and states will spark some debate. Cool

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
