Therevidae
Dimitri Geystor
Greetings,

I'm seeking your advice on this determination.

I first thought this fly to be Pandivirilia eximia (Meigen, 1820). Then, a member of the Insecte.org forum pointed out to me that, according to the determination key of Van Veen (which I was not aware of), P.eximia should not have a hairy face.

http://home.hccnet.nl/mp.van.veen/therevidae/therevidae.html

The key leads me to :

22.a. Tergite 4-6: lateral margin entirely shining black; thoracic dorsum with two yellowish grey longitudinal stripes and two pairs of dorsocentral bristles. 9-11 mm. -> Thereva cincta Meigen

Your opinion would be greatly appreciated (click on the photos for enlarged view).

It resembles the one that was identified as Thereva auarata earlier, but maybe there are similar species around. See http://www.dipter...ead_id=477.

Amazing photo of the head. May I ask what equipment you used for this?

Zeegers
this is a Thereva no doubt.

To tell the species, is more difficult.

Resembles, yes, but not identicatal by a long shot. Unless you consider that these variations in "fluffiness" and "fur color" are witnin acceptable bounds. Before posting my message I had examined the Thereva pictures on diptera.info, and discarded the aurata hypothesis.
Well, there we are then, without a conclusive identification.

Thanks a lot, nevertheless, Paul.

Sure.
Canon 20D with Canon MP-E 65 mm macro lens.
Composite picure treated with Helicon focus software for increased depth of field.

Dimitri
