I want to know its ID
zhengxialin
Which Syrphid? I found Hubei province (altitude 1200m)in China. Its larva damage the underground stem of Gastrodia elata Bl.(a kind of medicinal plant). I had attached these pic, including Adult, stripe of adult's abdomen(rear observation),wing vein and pupae. I look forward to receive yours replies.

Is it merodon?

Menno Reemer
It may be Merodon, but as I see no apicoventral spine on the hind femur I suspect that it is a species of Azpeytia. The very wide scutellum is also an indication in that direction. Perhaps if you could add some more picture in which the hind femur and the head profile are better visible we could confirm this identification.
If it is Azpeytia, this would probably be the first rearing record for this genus, which is worth a published note!

Thanks for your reply. Now, according to your advice, I add these pictures including the hind femur, the head profile and the body profile. I look forward to your answer.

Yes, it's an Azpeytia. Similar to A. shirakii Hurkmans (= nom. nov for A. scutellaris Shiraki), but it may also be another species.

Hello, menno. I think Azpeytia shirakii Hurkmans, 1993 was discovered for the first time in China. But now I have any descriptive data about it. Could help me to find these descriptive data? Thank you very much.
