About 1cm long with wings? In a forest or other shaded, humid biotope, a garden perhaps? Conspicuously sitting on leaves near the ground? Am I right?  This is Hydrophoria lancifer (Anthomyiide). It is by far the most numerous large fly in humid forests right now here in Scandinavia. I must have seen a thousand lancifers during the last few days. Kahis |

Well, I only saw this one when I took the photo and it didn't look big. Perhaps because it is rather slender and long legged. Well, large is a relative term. My normal prey is around 1-4 mm (Agromyzids, Medetera etc), compared with those microflies lancifer is huge. Kahis |
