Unidentified Haematopota
syrphus
Hello all. I was bitten by a Haematopota sp. in N Skye (W Scotland) on 14 June 2006. My initial examination failed to put a name to it, as it had the antennae of H. crassicornis but the discal cell had a pale mark at each end in addition to the central r16;Yr17; mark. I passed the specimen to Philip Entwistle, who has similarly failed to identify it using keys by Oldroyd, Chvala, and Stubbs.

The significant characters are: first antennal segment not notched, though perhaps a slight indication of a notch on the right one only; third antennal segment entirely black; dorsal abdomen viewed from behind grey-brown; tergite 2 spotted; discal cell with 4 white marks as described above.

We would be grateful for comments - in particular whether the variation in the discal cell marking of crassicornis extends to the pattern in this specimen, as we do not have a large series at hand to compare.

Thank you

Murdo Macdonald
