Big black robberfly (Laphriinae?)
Isidro
This magnific asilid, Laphriinae-like, was yesteday at La Peņa, Huesca, NE Spain, in Pre-Pyrenees at 500 meters. Sizes about 30-35 mm. Seems like a Laphria but as far as I know this genus is from high mountain and the place was only a 500 meters above sea. Pogonosoma maroccanum is very different. Maybe a very big Choerades??? I wish very much an ID.

Attracted for a wide bright white surface for taking sun.

Isidro,

This seems to have a head shape more like that of Andrenosoma than Choerades -- except the proboscis can't be seen (very important in this group). Wing cell r5 appears to be wide open -- characteristic of Choerades (closed petiolate in Andrenosoma). So fly is puzzling to me without more photos (or specimen!); do you have either?

Eric

Thanks a lot Eric, no, I haven't more photos (just when I go to take a lateral shot, the robberfly decided that it was enough and flied far) nor specimen.

Then is impossible? Frown

It's a Andrenosoma species, several species are described by Seguy.
