 [Machimus sp] Asilidae

Hello, I found this Asilidae in Olmeto (Corsica, France), on 23th september 2004, in a "leafy" forest. Size was 18 mm approx.     (Other pictures and closer details available on request) What about its ID ? What criterias can help determining the genus ? Thanks !

Hi Artrhopa, I'd say it's something like Philonicus judging by the complete(?) black legs en the very low positioned facial knob. Cheers, John |

Thanks, John. When having a closer look at the legs, it seems that fore legs and middle legs are not whole black, but with brownish tibias :  So this one should not be Philonicus ? Any other idea ?... And here is a closer view of the head :  Thanks for your help, Greetings Benoit MARTHA |

I would also say it is a Machimus. Knowing it comes from Corsica, it is impossible to identify it to the species level! Mark |
