Golden fly
Andre Jas
Hi once more,

This small was sitting (with some relatives) near the waterside. What is it?

Thanks,

Andr

How small was 'small'...? Wink

I think Microchrysa polita, soldier fly (Stratiomyidae).

Hi Paul,

I'd say 8-10 mm. I've looked over some pics of Microchrysa polita and you might very well be right.

Hmm, 8-10 might very well be Chloromyia formosa but I thought the legs were altogether too dark for that one. Colour of the abdomen made me think of that species too, though.

Too big for Microchrysa. Stratiomyid colours here in Ireland are darker. Why not greener I wonder like the island? 90% sure this is Chloromyia formosa. Plenty of web pictures to browsePfft. Robert

Yeh, I'd go for C formosa - it looks just right.
