Tipulidae?
Xaver Frank
Hello!

Do you know, what a Tipulidae (?) rested on a balcony last week here in SE Saxony, Germany? Its length was 9 mm. Is it possible, to identify the sex, too?

Thank you, Xaver

Hi Xaver,

This is not a member of the Tipulidae but a species or Empididae (a male). I think Empis of Rhamphomyia. Maybe Paul can tell you more!

Reddish legs, blunt-tipped abdomen and long proboscis: Empis livida. Should be quite abundant in most of temparate North-Western Europe, especially in semi-open areas with some or lots of water.
