Our town park: flies on bones (1)
Dmitry Gavryushin
July 12, 2006.
Size ca. 3mm. Quite numerous on bones (vertebrae and parts of pelvic girdle of a cow I believe), together with Necrobia violacea (Cleridae) and Silphidae larvae.
Piophilidae, Prochyliza or Stearibia?

Dmitry Gavryushin
I think smaller ones (2-2.5mm) and with somewhat different forelegs are the males of the same species.

Another view.

Hi Dima,

I would say you are on the right track with Piophilidae. Without key I wouldn't dare to even guess the genus. As soon as the specimens are identified, would again be a nice addition to the gallery!

Piophilidae for sure. I think we will need to let a key or Andrey Ozerov loose on these. Smile

And they might even be different species: one has a yellow anterior margin to the frons, the other has not and the colour of the hind legs is also different.

There are two species of Piophilidae. Fotos 1 and 2 with Prochyliza varipes (Meigen), and fotos 3 and 4 with Protopiophila latipes (Meigen) Smile

Thanks a lot Andrey
