Fly in Search of Its Identity
Stephen
I wasn't even able to decide on a Family for this fly.

Date 7 July 2006, place West Virginia USA near a stream, size 5.7 mm.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I'd say Opomyzidae -> Opomyza. Let Jan Willem decide which one...

Hello Stephen,

That must be either Opomyza germinationis or O. petrei. Do you have other pictures of this fly where you can see the colouration of the abdomen? Otherwise it will be hard to get a positive identification.
My experience is that O. germinationis can be found almost everywhere, whereas O. petrei seems to prefer a more humid environment.

Jan, Paul, Thanks very much for your help with this one! Opomyzidae is a new family for me, or if I have photographed the family before, that previous photo is in my unidentified stack!

Unfortunately I took only two photographs, the first a distant shot just for insurance, and then a closer one. Both are this dorsal view, so I don't know about the abdomen.

The photo was taken at a place with a very large pond and a fairly large stream too. Certainly summer conditions there were humid...

Thanks again for the ID help!
