a question to Andre
zhengxialin
Andre, I ask a babyish question. Such as Eristalis cf. jugorum, what is the mean "cf". Wait your answer.

viktor j nilsson
Hi
I hope it is ok if I answer the question first.
When one writes Eristalis cf. jugorum, this means that it is likely to be this species, but that some other, similar species cannot be fully excluded. In my head I usually read it out something like: "Eristalis close to jugorum". This is frequently used when there is one very common species that have some rare look-alikes, so that it is most likely to be the common species, but you cannot exclude the others from a picture.

One can also write Eristalis aff. jugorum, if you are sure that it is not in fact jugorum, but a species closely related to it.
