3x Haematopota
Juergen Peters
Hello!

Is it possible to tell the Haematopota species after these photos? It seems, that only the males come to light at night. All pics taken yesterday in Ostwestfalen/Germany, the first two at night in the garden, the third one at noon at our house.

Thanks! Rather probable I think. Some days ago Tony Irwin wrote about another one of those, that it might be H. subcylindrica. But the photo was not good enough to be sure.
Best regards,
Jürgen

Hi Juergen,

I agree so far.
It is a male of either italica or subcylindrica.
I cannot tell from the pictures.
However, the circumstances and period of flight clearly favour italica.

Thanks a lot (also for your reply on my other Haematopota posting). One year ago I knew only one Haematopota species - pluvialis. And that mostly from the flat of my hand ;-). But these flies are really beatiful (and the males even harmless)!
Best regards,
Jürgen

Hi Juergen
I can't add any more than Theo on this one.
Except that if you can catch one of these flies and post it to me, we can put a definite name on it. Wink
