Sphaerophoria female
blowave
Hello,

I had a few males and females this year, where most look to be Sphaerophoria scripta and althought I realise the difficulties with males it is likely that where there are females there are also males.Wink

Two females looked different. This one was in a marquee on 5th July, although I also got a side view of what looks to be the same fly on the 2nd July if anyone wants to see it. I'm not posting it now due to the one per thread rule so as to not confuse.

Location is a few miles south of Lincoln UK, a mixture of woodland, crops and pastures but is I guess what is called heathland also. The species which I had in mind was Sphaerophoria fatarum as the only real evidence I could go on with my limited knowledge was the width of the bands on tergites 3 & 4 being less than half the tergite depth, and the two spots on T2 although they could be a broken band.

2 pics. I have another on Ragwort which I will post separately.

Hello Pierre,

Thank you for the kind comments. Smile Flies can be very beautiful.

These were usually very difficult to take photos of as the wind always blew the net, or the fly would walk about. I often climbed onto a step ladder to get them, or sometimes had to put my foot on the bottom of the net to try to keep it still.Wink
