Tachinidae
Tony Irwin
I could have caught it, but just wanted to get a slightly closer shot! Sad
I'm sure I've seen it before, but .... ?

Hmm, sorry - not quite enough to go on - what size was it? The only one that springs to mine with white 'shoulders' like that is Leiophora innoxia but that species is quite small.

(I am on holiday - so replies might be a bit slower than normal Wink)

Hi guys, take my ignorant advise too!
Among yet very few Tachinidae I did ID myself, was one with white shoulders round eyes, brown wing base - Phyllomyia volvulus.

Chris - quite a chunky beast, circa 10mm. Have a good holiday! Cool
Nikita - How many dipterists have identified a tachinid that stumped Chris and Theo? Wink You're a star!! Pfft
Here's another view. Looks just like yours, and now I read about it's behaviour - running around like a solitary wasp - just what it was doing.
Many thanks everyone. Smile

Sorry to spoil the party,

but it is not Phyllomyia. Phyllomyia is a very elongated form (Ichneumonidae mimic).
I do agree that there is a similarity with the photo mentioned by Nikita.
Nikita's photo is a Thelaira (given the plumose arista, not visible on picture).

Paul - can we have a new smiley that says "I feel very foolish and will go and sit in the corner"? Sad

Only those who don't learn from their mistakes are fools.

I'll post a picture of Phyllomyia
