Sometimes I encounter these tiny larvae in high intertidal freshwater marshes along the Schelde river. Is it correct that these are Cecidomyiidae? Thanks Jan Edited by Jaso on 04-03-2010 11:20 |

Dear Jan seems very much like a Cecidomyiidae. The (chitinized) head capsule looks reduced, which is diagnostic for the family. You may check if there is an Y-shaped chitinized plate at the ventral side of the first segment. If so, then Cecidomyiidae, else, I don't know. Furthermore, it has a very a-typical habitus with laterally flattened tergites (?), which I have never seen in other Cecidomyiidae. so it may well be typical for a particular genus. They have few lateral papillae but no sternal spatula......... In some Cecidomyiidae this can be the case ( K.G.V. Smith) cheers Jan |
