 Pupa from seepage

I watched this Liancalus virens female (see adults forum http://www.dipter...d_id=28515) feeding at a seepage in a limestone retaining wall. Can anything be said about its prey?

At the same seepage I also found what looks like a pupal skin from which something has emerged: |

To me it looks very much like the larva of a Thaumaleidae. This purplish/white pattern at the dorsal side and the entirely white ventral side resembles by specimen of Thaumalea from The Netherlands. I know of no other insect larva from aquatic habitats with this pattern, not even in Chironomidae of which many representatives of the Orthocladiinae are (totally !) purple. |
