Gymnosoma
Gordon Jar
The attached were photographed in South East England within 300 metres of each other. The top one on 01/08/06 and the lower on 08/08/06.

I initially thought the top was Gymnosoma rotundatum. Having read Theo's comments re the thred of 01/08/06 I became a little unsure and then I photographed the lower fly and as they appear to be very different and I became very unsure. Although I don't believe G. nidifron has been recorded in Britain

Can it be said whether they are male and female or two different species.

Thankyou
regards
Gordon

Hi Gordon,

Don't worry.
The top is a female, the bottom a male.
That explains the difference.

The top right is 100 % rotundatum (females are easier).
The bottom is most likely rotundatum as well.

You should have nudifrons in the UK.
Look at borders of coniferous forests (or parks, for that matter).

It should be there !!

But not in these pictures, unfortunately.

Thanks

Theo

Thankyou very much Theo.

I will make a point of looking around coniferous forests.
