Genus Syrphus?

I notice over at BugGuide none of the Syrphus flies are ID'd to species. I am guessing this is a hard genus to take to species, from a photo, anyway?

West Virginia USA, August 1st, along a river, visiting Queen Anne's Lace.

Hello Stephen
It's look like Syrphus ribesii

I?m not sure at all, but since the thigh is brown and not yellow, I think it is not Syrphus ribesii but Syrphus vitripennis. Am I right?
And he is a male.Smile

Thanks for the responses!

I forgot to mention in my first post that the length was 6.8 mm.

Especially BECAUSE it is a male it could be S. ribesii, because the yellow hinf femora character only applies to the females.
Still, it might be altogether another species, as this picture was taken in North America, with other possible species...
