 Social Sciaroidea larvae, NE HU, 06.2010

Hi, in a mixed forest, on dead decidous treee I found a small net of 'slime' under a polypore. What could the larvae be? Keroplatidae?

If it were not for the form of head - the biology (inhabiting under net) is like in Keroplatidae. However the known Keroplatidae larvae have form of head broaded anteriorly and these larvae have head wider posteriorly. Most probably it is some Mycetophilidae (Sciophilinae) from the group living on the surface of fungi.

If you have larvae with you and can look at it from dorsal - the most anterior part of head (labrum) may have 6-8 papillae (Leptomorphus). If you can look at it from lateral and it has long transparent palpae (sometimes directed forward far from the end of the head capsule) or bent down (Sciophila).
