Musca autumnalis?
Jan Zwaaneveld
But do not take this suggestion too seriously, I could be dead wrong. My interest in flies is very new, and I know virtually nothing about them. But going through the thumbs I got the feel that this fly might be a member of the Muscidae family, and it looks quite similar to Crex' pictures of Musca autumnalis.

Corrections are very welcome, confirmation even more, as you will understand.

By the way, are there any books on diptera you can recommend for a person who just started?

Thank you in advance!

You're dead right! Musca autumnalis female.
For advice about books, look through some of the threads in the literature section of the forum.

Hi Jan

By far the best book for beginners to get to family is the recent KNNV book by Oosterbroek et al.
Pity for Tony, it is only in dutch.
Good news: it is in the process of being translated.

If you want more background info, I can still recommand Coyler and Hammond as general textbook on Diptera. Difficul to get a copy, though. (try www.abebooks.com).

Gook luck
