Is this Phaonia? Looks similar to a fly I photographed early this Spring and that was identified as Phaonia. Are Muscids with this yellowish color at the base of the wings likely to be Phaonia? Attracted to a regular incandescent lamp outdoors, near both woodlands and open areas, West Virginia USA, 26 August 2006. --Stephen Stephen Cresswell www.americaninsects.net |

Stephen I am wondering if this is Pegomyia or one of the other similar Anthomyiids. The bristles on the foreleg don't look right for Phaonia, and neither does the shape of the abdomen - male and female Phaonia seem to be much the same body shape, and broader than this in the abdomen. The very strong pair of bristles at the break in the costa might be a clue too - not sure, and not sure I have expressed this correctly. The bristle pattern on the dorsal surface of the thorax looks like some Phaonia though eg P perdita Susan |

Well I will keep an eye out for this fly again, maybe can get some more detailed shots of the areas you mention. I believe I have seen these at lights before.
